OUR HISTORY
Founder Mark Roxey
The Roxey Ballet began in 1995 as a volunteer group called the Hunterdon Youth Ballet when professional dancers, Mark and Melissa Roxey, brought world-class professional dance training and performance opportunities to Hunterdon County, New Jersey and Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Mark and Melissa both had distinguished careers with American dance companies including The Joffrey Ballet, American Repertory Ballet, and Dayton Ballet, among others.
As the regional volunteer youth ballet company began to grow, the Hunterdon County Youth Ballet changed its name to The Roxey Ballet Company, Inc to reflect its clear direction and development into an outstanding touring professional dance company with a superb roster of internationally recognized artists from all over the world. Today audiences enjoy more than 70 repertory works and a wide range of full-length ballets including Frankenstein, Dracula and more.
The company has performed extensively around the country including New York, Massachusetts, Virginia, and Washington DC for the 2008 Inauguration of President Obama. The company is currently experiencing a major transition in its life cycle and is committed to procuring high-quality artists and original repertory works from emerging and established choreographers.
The Roxey Ballet's typical season includes performances from September through June of each year, including a Fall main-stage concert, the holiday classic production of The Nutcracker, a Winter event, and Children's Classic Stories spring productions. The remainder of the season is spent conducting a variety of services and concerts, from educational performances, Sensory Friendly Concerts, workshops, and residencies, to master classes and touring.

Founding and Artistic Director: Mark Roxey
For more than three decades, Mark Roxey has distinguished himself as an internationally respected artistic leader, executive director, producer, educator, choreographer, and visionary force within the performing arts industry. As the Founder and Artistic Director of Roxey Ballet, he has successfully built, sustained, and expanded a professional nonprofit dance organization for over 30 years—transforming a grassroots vision into a nationally recognized contemporary ballet company celebrated for artistic excellence, educational impact, accessibility, and community engagement.
Mark’s leadership extends far beyond choreography and performance. Throughout his career, he has overseen every aspect of organizational and artistic operations, including executive management, strategic planning, programming, production management, financial oversight, fundraising, audience development, marketing, touring, arts education, community partnerships, livestream broadcasting, and nonprofit administration. His rare ability to merge artistic innovation with operational leadership has enabled Roxey Ballet and Mill Ballet School to thrive as dynamic cultural institutions serving communities throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and beyond.
Widely respected as both a creative visionary and organizational builder, Mark has developed and sustained large-scale productions, educational initiatives, festivals, outreach programs, and multidisciplinary collaborations that bridge dance, theater, music, technology, education, and community engagement. Through strategic artistic programming and long-term audience cultivation, he has created signature productions and events that have played a critical role in sustaining Roxey Ballet’s operations and organizational growth over three decades.
Among the company’s hallmark productions under his leadership are The Nutcracker, Carmina Burana, Dracula, Cinderella, Journey Back to the 80s, Carmen, and numerous original contemporary works and multimedia productions. His programming has successfully served audiences across all demographics—from children’s productions and family programming to sophisticated contemporary works, educational residencies, community festivals, donor events, and adult-focused performances—creating a broad and sustainable artistic ecosystem that continues to engage diverse audiences year after year.
Raised in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, Mark first discovered movement through breakdancing, using dance as a powerful vehicle for personal expression, discipline, and transformation. His talent and dedication earned him a full scholarship to The Joffrey Ballet School, leading to professional engagements with Joffrey Ballet II, The Joffrey Ballet, American Repertory Ballet, and Dayton Ballet, ultimately performing as a principal artist alongside his wife and artistic partner, Melissa Roxey.
Throughout his performance career, Mark appeared in works by some of the most influential choreographers of the twentieth century, including George Balanchine, Gerald Arpino, Robert Joffrey, Paul Taylor, José Limón, Alvin Ailey, Twyla Tharp, William Forsythe, John Cranko, John Butler, Marius Petipa, and August Bournonville, performing on national and international stages as an acclaimed artist.
As Artistic Director of Roxey Ballet and its educational partner, Mill Ballet School, Mark has created hundreds of original choreographic works and directed productions ranging from classical ballet to socially impactful contemporary theater. He is also the founder and creator of the acclaimed River Dance Festival, which has provided performance and choreographic opportunities for hundreds of artists from across the country.
In addition to his extensive work on stage, Mark has directed and implemented thousands of residencies, outreach initiatives, workshops, assemblies, and educational programs serving an extraordinarily diverse range of communities and institutions. His work has spanned public and private schools, universities, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, corporate organizations, libraries, arts festivals, YMCAs, senior centers, disability service organizations, and special needs programs—often creating highly innovative and unconventional arts experiences designed to make dance accessible, transformative, and deeply engaging for all populations.
Known for his ability to think beyond traditional performance models, Mark has pioneered “outside-the-box” programming that merges education, wellness, storytelling, multimedia, social impact, and live performance. His initiatives have reached tens of thousands of students, educators, families, artists, and audience members throughout the United States, helping position Roxey Ballet as a leader in arts accessibility, community engagement, and multidisciplinary arts innovation.
Beyond producing performances, Mark has cultivated and mentored generations of artists—both aspiring and professional—guiding many toward successful careers in dance, theater, arts administration, education, choreography, production, and other creative industries. Over the course of his career, he has served as a mentor not only to performers, but also to emerging directors, educators, arts leaders, producers, and nonprofit professionals. His leadership philosophy has consistently emphasized discipline, innovation, collaboration, professionalism, and community impact.
Mark has also been deeply involved in arts advocacy and cultural leadership through service on numerous boards, committees, advisory groups, and statewide arts organizations. His service has included leadership roles with Dance/USA, APAP, IPAY, Dance New Jersey—where he served as President—and the Mid-Atlantic Arts Disability Justice Committee, among many others.
A passionate advocate for accessibility and inclusion in the arts, Mark co-founded the Arts Access Program at Matheny Medical and Educational Center alongside Melissa Roxey, where they spent more than a decade creating groundbreaking choreography and educational opportunities for individuals with severe disabilities.
Mark’s work and leadership have been featured in countless publications, media outlets, and television programs throughout his career, including appearances on PBS and numerous regional and national arts and cultural platforms. His artistic vision, nonprofit leadership, and commitment to community impact have earned widespread recognition across both the performing arts and nonprofit sectors, including honors such as the New Jersey Governor’s Award in the Arts and recognition as Hunterdon County’s #1 Mover & Shaker.
Above all, Mark Roxey has dedicated his life to building meaningful artistic experiences that inspire, educate, and unite communities. His extraordinary ability to combine artistic excellence with executive leadership, nonprofit management, production expertise, mentorship, and entrepreneurial innovation has established him as a transformative force within the arts sector. Through dance, education, multimedia production, cultural programming, and community leadership, he continues to shape a lasting legacy of creativity, accessibility, leadership, and opportunity.
