"We want to make sure we are always connecting and building bridges to all parts of our beautiful community. We are excited to create these types of access opportunities for people living with autism and special needs to participate in a way that makes dance more accessible and enjoyable to them."
- Mark Roxey, Executive Founding Director of Roxey Ballet
The Pied Piper of Hamelin
Roxey Ballet is proud to offer relaxed, sensory-friendly performances of The Holiday Classic The Nutcracker and the Children's Classic Series Pied Piper of Hamelin for children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder, special needs, and other sensitivity issues. These performances are great for families with young children. Performances are held at The College of New Jersey’s Kendall Main Stage Theater, 2000 Pennington Rd. Ewing, NJ 08628.
What makes it "sensory-friendly"?
A friendly, supportive environment for families with special needs loved ones. Adaptations to the performance include:
lower sound levels
elimination of potentially startling special effects and lighting
house lights remain at about 50%
relaxed house rules -- you are free to get up, move around, and leave whenever you need to
allowed use of iPads and other electronics for therapeutic uses
volunteers scattered throughout the theater to assist and direct audience members as needed
quiet areas and activity areas in the lobby for taking a break
fidget objects and earplugs available
certified staff, ushers, and volunteers from a wide variety of autism service agencies, schools, and organizations
